About Me

December 2006 - Posts

After getting the providers configured, and enabling anonymous access, SgDotNet was able to serve authenticated users but not anonymous access. But almost the same environment with the exception of a domain controller in my development machine allows anonymous access. Having no time, I just shelved that until SharePoint RTM.

Finally, I have to upgrade the installation to RTM, because we are going to start planning for community launch for office, vista and exchange, which will probably happen next year around april timeframe. Upgrade was smooth, thanks to Shane Young's walkthrough. Took a deep breathe, and hit www.sgdotnet.org. What greated me was the publishing template homepage! *Happy*

Tried sign-in as my community server credentials. No error, but I'm still at the login page... *Scratch Scratch*. Sign out from the community server, and I'm automatically signed to SharePoint. Fire up my msn, and got Icelava at the other end.

After we sync up the machine keys in the web.configs, we have SSO! Now SGDotNet has a CMS and portal system!!! And you know what? The best thing is the check-in check-out feature works (not that it shouldn't, but it's cool!) across zones! Meaning, if I check out the default.aspx page at www.sgdotnet.org, the default page at website.sgdotnet.org (which is using AD to authenticate) is also checked out!

We are finally alive once again! Next obstacle, event registration!

I am currently upgrading SharePoint's discussion list to have features almost similar to what Community Server provides for a project. Have a need to refer to the sdk which is in chm format. But everytime I open up the file and tried to read it, it keep giving me "Navigation was cancelled" error.

Did a google live search, and found the resolution here.

I was alerted by Bernard Tham about this thing last week, not sure whether to call it a product, since the only information available now is the website and a overview document in pdf. Didn't have time to look into it as I was busy with preparing my presentation.

The solution is called Rich Media Collaboration Services. It  builds on Office SharePoint Server 2007 to provide a collaboration layer on top of existing business and production systems, and integrates the Connected Service Framework to provide a digital workflow.

It also implements existing industry standards such as MPEG-21, Digital Item Declaration Language (DIDL) and MPEG-21 Digital Item Identification (DII).

From the screenshot, it already has the webpart that Steve has provided here, just that it looks sleeker...

But that's about all the information available currently. Anyone has any additional information on the product, please let me know... Thanks

After lunch, as I was listening to the first presentation about security, I started to panick already... So I left the room, and walk around. when I was back, the 2nd presentation was already over. Shirley (techmex) knows I was nervous, and asked me to go get a drink. When I was back, I saw Dennis at the front row, and went up to him. He was very supportive, telling me what to look out. Nuqman, who joined K2.net last month suddenly appeared as well, and gave me support.

Finally, it was my turn... Went up and started speaking. At first I thought I was doing ok, though I started forgetting what I wanted to say, but my notes helpped me a little bit. But when it is demo time, things started to screw up.

I switch to my virtual server remote control client (vmrc), and switch to full screen. Instead of the login prompt of my SharePoint machine that greeted me, it was my vista desktop, without any icons, task bar... Tried to get my task manager up, and it is working, but still no SharePoint login prompt... Panicked. Dennis asked me what happened, I told him don't know. Oh no, the VMRC is not working on me... Log off, log on, and all the icons came back. Started the VMRC again, but this time, I dare not hit full screen again...

Started with the demo on Slide Library in SharePoint. But when I tried to publish my slides to the slide library, I couldn't, because SharePoint can't find my AD to authenticate. Quick check with the network settings and found that my AD is connected to the my wireless adapter, which I specifically set it to internal network during the keynote. Sigh, don't know what is going on...

Continued with my demo, but all these hiccups is making me more nervous... Went through the demo of content types, initiating workflow, records center... Came down the stage pretty demoralised.

Dennis told me that my demo wasn't really effective, as I didn't explain a lot through the steps. But without a trainer background, and it was my first time speaking at this scale, it was pretty good. He then sit with me through Vincent Oh's presentation, explaining to me what he was doing. Nuqman, Chewy was pretty encouraging as well. Bernard called me too, and encouraged me as well, telling me I have to continue presenting, and not be affected by this. Just make sure I don't repeat the same mistakes.

It is a valuable experience, and really glad to have friends who supported me yesterday. Special thanks to Wee Hyong, who came just for my topic.

Now, it is back to SharePoint! Looking forward to a POC that involves integration with SAP, Sibel and Lotus Notes!

I've installed Vista on my machines, but I'm having problem access certain file shares and intranet sites. Not because Vista is not good, as I don't think the problem lies with Vista, but rather with the way the infrastructure is deployed. My other colleagues who are daring enough to install Vista faces the same problem...

We then write to helpdesk, and the reply I get is one of a kind... I quote...

"Vista RTM copies are meant for evaluation. The OS is not (yet) officially supported. As with any evaluation software, it is "buyer-beware", the user is expected to resolve all technical issues himself/herself. We support only W2K and XP as client operating systems. Note that evaluation s/w are not meant to be used in a production environment, they should be used in a lab environment."

SIgh, when was RTM meant for evaluation? Then, may I know what is meant for production?

Bought a 4gb Imation Shivel Pro 2 today. Wanted to use it to boost the performance a little bit using readyboast. Even though the drive is one of the fastest Imation has, at 7 mb/s, it failed the performance test. Regreted not getting the ScanDisk Titanium one, which has a write speed of 9mb/s. But can't blame me, because the ScanDisk one cost $99 for a 2gb version, while the 4gb Imation one cost only $135...

Sigh... :(

I'm invited to present at the Business Value Launch of Office, Vista and Exchange. Will be talking about secure and manage content.

Went for the rehearsal today, they have lots of chairs, and a stage in every room... Nervous like mad liao... :p

But I'm also very honoured, because it was Bernard Tham who asked me to stand in for him. If you have seen his presentation before, you will know his standard. I'm no where near him, but I will do my best. Lots of interesting stuff tomorrow, so see you!

I have been trying very hard to get Vista Ultimate x64 on my core2duo desktop ever since the bits was up on MSDN. After the bits was taken up and reposted up recently, I immediately download the new bits, borrowed another dvd drive from my colleague, and still have no luck getting Vista installed.

Everytime Vista boots up from the DVD drive, going pass the inital screen where it asked about languages and keyboard layout was smooth. But after clicking install, it always gives me problem here. Vista can't detect my dvd rom (TDK), but it can boot from it. What a joke... When I used my colleague's DVD drive (also TDK), it gives me problem after keying in the key, and it just can't find some file.

Been searching the Internet for resolution, and read about problems with the JMicron thing on the motherboard. Disabling it is not an option, as I will lose IDE, which my DVD drive depends on. Anyone out there got any idea how to get Vista installed? I got half a mind to march down to Sim Lim to see if I can get a Sata DVD drive!!! Or just forget about Vista...
