It has been said before, to get into a higher salary range, one has to be promoted out of a development job. Tis sad.

But then again, the craftsmen of the ancients probably got peanuts for their pay as well......

I beg to differ actually. I am a singaporean, but I think it pretty sad everyone wants to be a PM, Manager, etc after a few years in development. I can hardly find any software developers that has worked more than 5 years. Salary range example given I think is not accurate, SE can make a lot more, but it depends on skillset providing, number of years actually isn't a good gauge.

For example, to me, a good developer has; 1) good language and patterns knowledge, 2) methodologies such as those in Agile, 3) Architectural frameworks and such. Strong in coding only means a developer is good by himself, but these days, you have to work in a team. For example, these days you almost certainly need TDD to ensure we don't break each other code in a team development environment.

To get these sort of calibre, I had to recruit from places such as Sweden, Korea, US, etc. you can hardly find any in Singapore. I know many foreigners who are working in Singapore now as developers, they are commanding >15,000SGD per month, and we are not talking about the silly 'foreign talent' policy abuse in the past, we are talking about people who are really good at what they do, >10 years experience, with wide area of knowledge.

Exactly. This part of the world places very little respect for software development as a craft, and more value on the commoditization of development. When such a profession gets commoditized, we end up with a population unwilling to dedicate the hours for that kind of money. Singaopreans generally being a pragmatic lot naturally flock to where the taps opens the widest. When people are having the thought of "ho than" first in their minds we end up with a population that does not fully understand, nor wants to, the intricacies and delicate matters that go with the profession (not just IT and software engineering). And we need not look very far to see what type of quality we end up with.

I have a few very simple questions - that technically aren't about a specific technology - that guarantee 99% of interviewees cannot pass. It is very telling of people's interest and focus in life, yet at the same time bewildeirng why they are even in this field.

I don't think > SGD 15000/mth is a figure close to reality for software developers here in Singapore.

Maybe these guys are the owner themselves :) hence paying high bucks for themselves.

I think reality here in Singapore, it's even hard (if not very hard) to find Software Engineers or Software Developers who got pay more > SGD 6000, but for Senior SAP Consultant this figure is quite a common one.

Ironically, it's much easier to be a good SAP Consultant as compared to be a good software developer.

I think at the end, it all boils down to law of demand (& supply).

I think your salary information is way too antiquated. Check out the major head hunter's salary reports. Demand now is REALLY high in singapore, Barclays moved their development center from London to Singapore trying to get to 1200 staff for IT alone, Morgan Stanley is starting to do the same, etc. I have friends whom only work for 4 years making more than 6k per month. >15k is not a self-employed, I am talking about employees. I myself run software development companies for a living.

At the end of the day, you can get people at the rate you mention, but you pay peanuts, you get ______. whomever wants GOOD developers will have to fight with the rest of the banks, etc and pay top dollars.

Yes, demand for IT is much higher now. But the supply is equally high...

anyway, reality is 6K is not an average Software Developers salary..i think 4K is more a reasonable figure, and only if you have few years of working experience and technically good enough...

Actually, we can get a very very good one with just 3K if we setup our software development center in country like Philippine, Indonesia and Vietnam. Not India, it's too far away, and many of them command high pay (but with just an average skills).

In India ,Salary  for software professionals are high  compared to other professions, I am sad to note it otherway round in singapore.

The demand for IT  proffessional is so high in India  that the students  are  getting recruited  an year before completion  of the academic  with average salary ranging from  1800 to 3500 SGD  pm.(cost of living is low compared to Singapore)

So now Iam opting for  developers from phillipines and china .

Okay, I remember my last company pays about 8k - 12k per month for a contract developer from India, half of which goes to the agency. That was 4 years ago. Local developers, rare species, are paid less than 4k per month.

If the average is around SGD 4000, it is comparable to South Africa (I think), even though statistics claim higher.

The cost of living is probably much lower here though, and it is a pretty good salary to be earning.

Also, salaries advertised on the forum often seem much lower than I expected someone in Singapore to be earning.

So.. anyone want to come work here? :) There is a definite demand and a fast growing asian community. :)

Because not everybody wants to be a conductor? Some just want to play the violin, or cello, or clarinet, etc.

Because not everybody wants to be a director? Some like to act, some like to do video editing, soundtrack composition, etc.

and i like being a techie Wink it would probably be boring for me if i got into a non-technical job.

sad to say, that's the way it is in Singapore and in other countries/companies: to get a raise, you need to detach yourself from technical work. eventually you become a PHB! ha ha
